What If I Didn't Get a 1099-K From Airbnb?
No credit card required
Not receiving a 1099-K from Airbnb does not mean your rental income is tax-free. Under IRC §61(a), all income is taxable regardless of whether a reporting form was issued. The 1099-K is Airbnb's reporting obligation to the IRS — your obligation to report income exists independently and applies whether the form was sent or not.
Why You Might Not Have Received a 1099-K
There are several legitimate reasons Airbnb may not have issued a 1099-K:
1. Below the Federal Threshold
For 2026, the federal 1099-K reporting threshold is $5,000 in gross payment volume per calendar year per platform. If your total Airbnb payouts (before host fees) were under $5,000, Airbnb is not required to issue a federal 1099-K. This is the most common reason hosts don't receive the form.
2. Incorrect Taxpayer Information on File
Airbnb uses your W-9 information (name and Social Security number or EIN) to generate your 1099-K. If the name on your Airbnb account doesn't match the name on your IRS records, or if your SSN is incorrect, Airbnb may not be able to generate a valid 1099-K. The form may have been suppressed or rejected.
3. Delivery Issues
Airbnb delivers 1099-Ks both electronically (through your host dashboard) and by mail. If your account email or mailing address is outdated, the form may have gone to the wrong place. Check your Airbnb account under Account → Taxes → Tax Documents.
4. State Threshold Already Met (Different State Cutoffs)
Some states have lower 1099-K reporting thresholds than the federal $5,000. If you're in one of those states, you may receive a state-only 1099-K but not a federal one. Note that your income is taxable either way.
The IRS does not need a 1099-K to audit you. The agency has other means of identifying unreported rental income — including data-sharing arrangements with platforms. Failing to report STR income below the 1099-K threshold is not a safe strategy. It is simply unreported income, which carries penalties and interest if discovered.
How to Calculate Your Income Without a 1099-K
If you don't have a 1099-K, your income number comes from your own records. Here's how to get it:
- Step 1: Log in to your Airbnb host account at airbnb.com
- Step 2: Go to Menu → Hosting → Earnings (or similar navigation)
- Step 3: Filter by the tax year you need (e.g., January 1 – December 31, 2025)
- Step 4: Download the full transaction history as a CSV
- Step 5: Sum all guest payment amounts (this is your gross income)
- Step 6: Identify Airbnb host service fees charged — these are deductible
Do this for every platform you used during the year: Airbnb, VRBO, Booking.com, direct bookings. Add the gross income from all sources. Each platform's fees are separately deductible. Update Your W-9 Information in Airbnb
To ensure you receive a 1099-K when you do cross the threshold, keep your taxpayer information current in your Airbnb account:
- Go to Account → Taxes → Taxpayer information
- Verify your legal name matches your IRS records exactly (as it appears on your Social Security card or business formation documents)
- Verify your Taxpayer Identification Number (SSN or EIN)
- Update your mailing address if you've moved
- Opt into electronic delivery to ensure you receive the document directly
If your name or TIN is incorrect, you may receive a backup withholding notice from Airbnb (28% withholding on payouts) until the information is corrected. Update it promptly.
What to Do If You Think You Should Have Received a 1099-K
If you exceeded $5,000 in gross Airbnb payouts and did not receive a 1099-K:
- First, check your Airbnb tax documents portal (electronic delivery)
- Verify your taxpayer information is correct
- Contact Airbnb host support to request your tax documents
- File your taxes based on your own income records regardless of the 1099-K status
